Epidural certification
In my first few months here I have not had the capability to run my own epidurals. I would have to call in another midwife to oversee the epidural. It was really a pain, no pun intended. So I got the epidural booklet, studied up, took the test, got my skills signed off, and contacted the chief of OB anaesthesia to have a chat.
It took a couple weeks to finally contact him and set up the appointment, and yesterday I was finally able to meet with him. He is the nicest guy you will ever meet, and we just sat and chatted about my experience and then he very hesitatingly asked me if I knew about indications and contraindications for epidurals, so I listed some. Then he very shyly and quietly said "well, you must know the complications of epidurals..." at which point I said yes, paused, and then launched into the most common complications and how I would manage them.
He said, "Well, you know your stuff, I'm happy for you to go ahead" and after a bit more small talk, we shook hands, and parted ways.
Now I don't have to call my co-workers in the middle of the night to run the silly epidural pump!

Hurrah!
Dear Baby Catcher --
Nice blog!
I just read through to this post and have to tell you I am dismayed and must ask -- "WHY!?!? as a midwife are you training for and using epidural? It is so known to be dangerous for the baby -- the research is clear. NARCOTICS!! A woman and baby birthing "under the influence" will live their lives with the consequences physically and emotionally.
OF COURSE, sometimes a woman and baby must have pain medication -- and then there are understandings in pre and perinatal psychology about how to administer, monitor, and support the dyad WITH CONSCIOUSENESS. It ought to be last resort. Women ought to be expected to PREPARE in all ways for conception, pregnancy, labor and birth, and mothering. It is not just a "woman's right" to labor and birth drug impaired.
I am saddened because it the midwives who I see as our champions for the woman AND THE BABY. There is no way in which it is the baby's best interest for his/her mother to labor "under the influence" of narcotic epidural anesthesia. I have done so --- a woman is NOT only "numb fromt the waist down". She is numbed emotionally and unless someone makes great effort to support her to stay connected internally with her baby (not watching tv, chatting, etc) she and her baby's connection is tragically harmed.
And, I submit this with the greatest respect for what you do and that you have put much effort into your decision. It is just SO CRITICAL that ANY intervention or drug used on a laboring and birthing baby be done with respect for the wholeness and sentience of the baby and with conscious regard.

Just a bit of clarification: I am not actually PERFORMING the epidural, just running the pump after the anaesthetist places it and continuing care of the woman.
When a woman asks for pain medication, we inform the woman of the pros and cons of all their options (utilising the non-pharmacological ones first)and let them make the choice. I agree that there are implications for breastfeeding and bonding, as well as numerous complications with epidurals, but as long as the mothers are informed of these risks, who am I to make decisions for them?
Ideally, every woman could birth without pain medication, but the fact of the matter is that some women cannot, and I do my best to educate, empower, and encourage them to do without, but it is ultimately their decision. I'm not going to deny midwifery care to a woman because she wants an epidural.
(and by the way, I'm an RM, not a CNM - we don't have CNMs in Canada!)
I applaud your efforts to encourage women to avoid medication, and hope that someday the rates of epidurals, inductions, and c/sections will decrease. I'm certainly trying to do my part.
Hey there! Quick question that's entirely off topic. Do you know how to make your site mobile friendly? My site looks weird when viewing from my iphone. I'm trying to find a template or plugin that might be able to fix
this issue. If you have any recommendations, please share.
Many thanks!

I think that what you published was actually very logical.
But, think about this, suppose you were to write
a killer post title? I ain't suggesting your content is not solid, but what if you added a title to possibly get people's attention?
I mean "Epidural certification" is a little plain.
You should peek at Yahoo's front page and see how they create post titles to grab people interested. You might try adding a video or a related picture or two to grab people excited about everything've got to say.
Just my opinion, it would bring your posts a little livelier.

Woah! I'm really loving the template/theme of this site. It's simple, yet effective.
A lot of times it's very difficult to get that "perfect balance" between usability and appearance. I must say you've done a fantastic job with this.
Also, the blog loads extremely quick for me on Safari. Excellent Blog!
